Members of chemistry department staff work to develop and add new practical activities to provide students with a wide and varied range of opportunities during routine lessons, which incorporate problem solving activities during practical work to foster academic engagement and resilience. Collection, analysis and evaluation of data are crucial for understanding and applying a wide range of familiar chemical concepts in unfamiliar contexts.
Each year a team of Year 8 pupils take part one of the annual Salters’ Festival of Chemistry events. This provides an opportunity for our students to gain experience of working in a modern, well equipped University laboratory. Year 11 students visit the Cavendish Laboratories in Cambridge to participate in a range of lectures.
