Y7 Football - Central Venue League Champions
On Wednesday 16th March, the Year 7 football team travelled to Skegness Academy to play in their football matches for the school. The team, as expected were in an eager mood on the coach, even the on pour of rain crashing against the bus didn’t dampen their spirits.
In their first game, they were up against Barnes Wallis. QEGS bossed proceedings from the start, with GK Nathan Nelson, barely touching the ball. However, despite all the possession, QEGS wasted a hatful or chances, before Flynn Greetham and Henry Emsell secured a 2-0 win for QEGS.
Skegness Grammar, were QEGS second opponents. Once again, QEGS controlled the play, reducing Skegness to a few counter attacks. With the weather conditions getting worse by the minutes, the team continued to battle and despite Skegness scoring a fantastic goal to equalise, the team went on to win 3-1. The goals scorers were Themba Lungu, Will Frost and Jasper Edney. Two games played and maximum points secured.
In their third game, their opponents were Skegness Academy. QEGS now full of confidence and playing some good football, they easily brushed Skegness Academy aside with a dominant display. The game finished 6-0, but it could have been a lot more. The goals scorers were Henry Emsell (x2), Jacob Gifford and a hat-trick for Themba Lungu.
In their final game, it was the derby game verses Banovallum. Despite already securing top spot, the team was determined to finish the tournament with a 100% win record. This looked in doubt early on, when Banovallum took a shock lead. It was the first time QEGS had been behind, some teams may have sulked and gone on to lose. Not this team, they rolled up their sleeves, pulled together and went on to win the game with ease. Goals being scored by Themba Lungu, Flynn Greetham and Will Frost.
The team were a credit to the school, unless you were playing or spectating, nobody would’ve appreciated the extreme weather conditions the team had to play in. They didn’t moan they just got on with it and Mr Cope was extremely proud of every one of them.
