League success for the Y9 Football Team
On Wednesday 8th March, the Y9 footballers travelled to Skegness Grammar School to compete in this term’s Central Venue League.
The footballers were one of five teams competing in the league alongside the hosts Skegness Grammar, Skegness Academy, Barnes Wallis and the team’s main rivals Banovallum.
The team’s first game was against Barnes Wallis and it was a close game, despite QEGS have numerous chances to make the score line more emphatic. The game finished 1-0 to QEGS, with the goal being score by Will Swain. It was an excellent goal by Will, show picked the ball up just past half way, dribbled past few defenders, before hitting a low shot into the far corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance! A positive start from QEGS, which gave them 3pts from the first game.
Their second game was an extremely tight and nervy affair against a strong and physical Skegness Grammar team. QEGS took an early lead, thanks to a close range finish from Ryan Scott, after the goalkeeper had denied Lucas Francis’s header from a corner. The team defended valiantly, with Harry Milne making some excellent saves in goal. The team managed to hang onto their lead and win the game. Two games down and 6pts on the board.
In their third game, the team came up against Skegness Academy, whose striker had scored a brace in their previous game, of his goals being a bicycle kick from a free kick. However, the inform striker was marked out of the game by Lucas Francis, Ethan Fowler and Saul Hooper and as a result did not get a sniff at goal. The game finished 0-0.
So after three games the team were top of the table on 7pts. Their fourth and final game was against their bitter rivals Banovallum, who only a couple of weeks ago beat QEGS 5-0 in a friendly match. Revenge was on the teams mind, but they also knew the importance of the game, avoid defeat they win the league. Lose and Banovallum win the league. Banovallum started on the front as they knew only a win would do to clinch top spot. Once again, QEGS were resolute at the back and nullified Banovallum’s attacking threat. Another 0-0, which meant QEGS won the league finishing on 8pts and conceding no goals.
At the end, the team were jubilant, but were respectful of the opposition. A fantastic achievement and fully deserved.
