District Athletics 2024

The QEGS athletics team showing off their medals!

On Thursday 4th July, QEGS took part in the annual district athletics event at King George Stadium, Grimsby. This is the only event, where all 15 schools from this district come together to compete. Like usual, the QEGS team were competing in Div. 1 against 7 other schools. After finishing 4th overall in Div.1 last year, there was optimism that we could do better this time around. However, this optimism was cut short by the fact we had no Y8 team due to them being on a residential and some of our best Y10 athletes being on a Geography field trip. Despite the team missing several key athletes, the students who took part did a brilliant job and because of this we managed to remain in Div. 1 for next season.

Special mentions go to the following individuals, who achieved 1st place in their respective events:

In Y10, Chloe Fields who won all 5 events of her events, these were the 100m, Discus, SP, HJ and 200m. Within these 1st place finishes, Chloe managed to break two district records. 1st being in Discus where she threw 24.50m (previous record was 22.02m from 2016) and the 2nd being in Shot Putt where she threw 10.70m (previous record was 9.78m from 2016). These records may stand for a while! Morgan Beese who won the triple jump.

In Y9, Lea Frick won the high jump, Daniel Miao won both the triple and long jump and Jasper Edney won the 100 and 200m. The boys relay team comprising of Jasper Edney, Themba Lungu, Toby Maude and Daniel Miao won the 4x100m relay. The Y9 boys team overall performed extremely well and as a result won the team event in Div.1.

In Y7, Lydia Ratcliff won the 100m and long jump, Erin Davis won the 200m and Discus and Seb Treasure won the 200m. The boys relay team consisting of Seb Treasure, Sonny Jolliffe, Daniel Thorpe and Harry Watson won the 4x100m relay.

Finally, a big thank you to Miss Hebden and to our wonderful Y13 students Jess East and Emma Eastham who encouraged and managed the teams ensuring all students were at their events on time. Also, a massive thank you to Y13 students Tristan Cull and Dillan Jaggernauth, who assisted with officiating the girls high jump event, they did a great job! On reflection, a very successful day!
