The school library has over 11,000 items available for students to use. There are in excess of 5,000 fiction books with all the latest releases available to encourage reading for pleasure and more than 6,000 non-fiction books to help support subject areas, a fantastic resource for help with homework.
The library subscribes to a number of magazines and newspapers, has a collection of foreign language DVDs, encyclopaedia and some computer software disks.
All students automatically become members of the library and in Year 7 are entitled to borrow two books for a two-week period. This is in addition to the English Department books which are also dispensed from the library. All books borrowed are the responsibility of each individual student and should be returned undamaged to the library in a timely manner to avoid incurring fines.
To issue books a biometric identification system is used in the form of finger print recognition. A fingerprint is taken but the image is not stored. The computer software calculates a huge number from the image and it is this number that is stored. The (encrypted) number cannot be used to reconstruct the original image. Student and parental consent is required and is obtained on joining the school.
Library Lessons are incorporated into the Year 7 English timetable and through these fun, interactive sessions students become very familiar with the workings and benefits of the library to ensure continued use throughout their school life.
There are six computers available for student use, which become very popular at lunchtime for completing homework and for restricted recreational use.
The library is open throughout the school day apart from morning break.
The librarians Mrs Samra and Mrs Simons are friendly and approachable and are always happy to help.
