QEGS music students visit the music department at Sheffield University

The Year 11 and 12 GCSE music students spent a day in the music department at University of Sheffield. Everyone was made very welcome with tea/coffee on arrival and then we were straight into university-style activities. The first was a seminar introducing the psychology of music. Students learnt about the positive impact music has on people with dementia, amongst other things, and also started designing their own qualitative and quantitative research on performance anxiety.  A lecture then was given by Professor Simon Keefe - world-leading researcher on Mozart - about The Marriage of Figaro (our A level set work) and after lunch, we experienced a workshop on performance techniques to help improve focus and concentration. It was a worthwhile day and one that raised the aspirations of many.  We hope to repeat the experience next Autumn!
